View Semester 2 Schedules  View Printable Version
Thursday, January 07 2010 @ 12:58 PM Central Standard Time
Contributed by: bcbrock

PowerSchoolI was recently asked if Special Needs teachers were able to see what classes their IEP students were scheduled in for 2nd semester. By default, PowerTeacher only shows you what classes they are currently enrolled in.

To enable teachers to view Semester 2 schedules, I've created a report that mimics the Class Schedule that students receive from the Guidance Office. The name of the report is S2 Schedules, and can be run for an entire class, or for a single student. It is available now in PowerTeacher.

Enrollment Summary Shows Transferred Out Students  View Printable Version
Wednesday, January 06 2010 @ 03:53 PM Central Standard Time
Contributed by: bcbrock

PowerSchoolOn the PowerSchool Start Page, click 'Enrollment Summary'.

Click the total number of students in the 'Total In Grade' column.

Do you see any students that are in black text, that you can't click on? If so, you are seeing the result of PowerSchool "forgetting" to update a field properly during the overnight tasks it runs. The field is Enrollment_SchoolID, and it should be set to the school number where the student is attending. If PowerSchool does not update this field properly when transferring students between buildings, that student will continue to be included on your Enrollment Summary report, even though he or she is no longer attending your school.

Fortunately, there is a way to update this field manually. Unfortunately, since the student has been transferred out of your building, YOU cannot do it. The school where the student is now attending must fix the problem for you.

It may be a good idea to make checking for problems with this field part of your normal routine!

To make identifying students with this problem simple, I've created a SQLReport (Enrollment Summary Fix) that will automatically find any students at your building who need to have the Enrollment_SchoolID field updated. After running the report, make any students listed your current selection, then use the 'Student Field Value' function to manually update the field. Click 'read more' below for photos.

Public Portal Calendar Subscriptions  View Printable Version
Thursday, December 17 2009 @ 04:07 PM Central Standard Time
Contributed by: bcbrock

PowerSchoolIt has come to our attention that there has been difficulty with the public portal and subscribing to calendars. After investigating, here is what we've discovered.

  1. This issue affects clients who are using windows-based calendar programs such as Microsoft Outlook.
  2. This issue is not isolated to Muscatine Schools. It has been widely reported from school districts across the nation.
  3. According to the Parent Portal User Guide, published by Pearson Education, Inc.,

"In order to use My Calendar, you must first have iCal installed on your computer. You will need Mac OS X version 10.2.3 or later to use iCal."

  4. There has been success in subscribing to PowerSchool calendar links using Google Calendar, regardless of which operating system is in use.

Unfortunately, the way the My Calendars page works is "hard coded" into PowerSchool - there is no way for us at Muscatine Schools to alter it's design, implementation, or behavior. We have contacted the company that develops PowerSchool to express our desire to make these links work with Windows based calendar programs.

We would like to assure Parents and Guardians using the PowerSchool Public Portal that we remain committed to providing you with the best possible experience in using it, and will provide updates regarding this issue when new information becomes available.

Blank Columns Report  View Printable Version
Tuesday, November 17 2009 @ 07:25 PM Central Standard Time
Contributed by: bcbrock

PowerSchoolA school is a very busy place, and we often need to keep track of information on a student-by-student basis. If there isn't a well established method of tracking that information, we are left to our own methods to keep on top of it.

The Blank Columns report is a new tool that we are providing to you for ad hoc tracking of your students. The report will simply list your selection of students, and provide blank columns that you can use to manually record any number of items.

This report is available to users of the admin and teacher portals of PowerSchool. Teachers can run it for any selected class; admin users can run it for any selection of students.

Click the read more link below for more information and previews of what the report looks like.
